Bussell Family~Susanville Family Portrait Photographer

I recently had a session with The Bussell’s. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this blended family. They were so fun, and laid back. Totally my style. It just isn’t fun if pictures are all stuffy, and formal. I normally ask questions to get to know people and their family dynamic. These guys have the best sense of humor ever. The boys didn’t complain, which is rare. I also got to learn a little about how this amazing family came together. It’s a great story that starts with a mommy meeting a little boy, and then his dad, and falling in love. I already know mom, and it was so awesome to get to know them more in depth. I treasure this family, and the opportunity I got to get to know them better. Thank you Daurie, Jody, Michael, and Brandon.

I Heart Faces~PETS

Well I do have the cutest dog in the world. Although some would disagree…haters. This is Miss Delilah. She’s GANGSTA. She was not to happy with me for this session I put together for her. Oh well. I bribed her with dog treats, we might be friends again. How can you resist this face? Thank you for visiting and commenting.

Day 11: Eyes

I will be updating this month as frequently as possible. I have decided to do a theme for the remainder of April. Shooting from the heart. I have said it many times, and I will never stop saying it. Photography isn’t always about technical stuff. Sure you need technical knowledge to get the look you are going for , but it’s about so much more than that. When I shoot, I am always looking for MEMORIES, not pictures, or snapshots. I truly believe this is what photography is about. This is also the number one reason I don’t do studio portraits. How do you show your true life in a posed portrait? It’s very hard. Don’t get me wrong, I do like some posing. There is always a time when you want a beautiful sit down family shot, but I don’t ever aim for stiffness and stuffiness. If your child is looking at a bug on a rock while the rest of you are posing, that to me, just shows their personality. This is real life people! I spend a lot of time trying to capture the memories of my own children. Being in the unique situation of having an 18 year old and one as young as 5, I have the rare opportunity of realizing how very, very fast the time comes when they leave you to venture into adulthood. I see my little Ben and realize that in the blink of 13 years he will be leaving me too. I will always want to remember the little freackles on his nose, how blue his eyes are, or the blondness of his hair before it darkens like the others. Today I shot from the heart. Always, I shoot from the heart. Memories in your mind fade. Memories in photographs last forever. The theme for this day was eyes. Here is my baby with the freckles, blonde hair, and very blue peeking eyes, that I will now always have for when my memory fades.

iphone Friday~Susanville portrait photographer

I have an iphone, and there are so many great camera apps out there these days. I find myself often taking little snapshots of daily life with my phone. It is easy, I always have my phone with me, and some of the shots turn out beautifully! I thought I would take a few minutes and share some of my recent shots, and a little of what happens in my week. I do use instagram quite a bit , my user name is @aprilwilliamsphotography if you so choose to follow me on there!

This is Maggie practicing for her ballet recital with The Susanville Symphony. That’s coming up on the last weekend of the month. It will be a beautiful show!

Mollie was accepted to UNR. We are so proud of her hard work. She has chosen to attend The Seattle Art Institute instead, but will be getting some general ed out of the way in Reno this upcoming year!

We decided to do some painting and sprucing up around the house. Here is my idea of hard work, me taking the pictures while Freman paints. Sheesh I don’t know how I endured!

Here is what my living room floor looks like about 80% of the time. Ben loves his legos and likes to play while I work or do things around the house.

My very favorite from the week. Ben and I found this funny app that puts things like a crown , or bunny ears, or antlers on your subject. It’s called funny antlers and it is free. We had a blast playing with this one. Ben even took pictures of some of his toys with crowns, etc. Milo was the targeted victim this week! Thanks for visiting my site. Hope the fun was a change of pace from all business around here lately.

DAY 11: Dreams. The challenge was to take a picture of someone you love while showing their dreams. I asked Freman if he would participate for this one. Then I asked him to tell me what his dream for our future was. His answer “After the kids leave, I want to have enough money to not have to worry about anything, and I want us to travel.” Then I laughed at him. See it’s a funny thing around here about traveling. I am terrified of flying, and he hates water. I guess motor home here we come!

Mister A~Susanville Family Photographer~Children

Mister A(name withheld for privacy) also had a birthday recently. He is Ro’s big brother. Have I mentioned how much these kids just LOVE having their pictures taken? NOT! There was some serious bribery going on here. But hey we do whatever it takes. I had to take the two out separately because they have an intense fear that I will make them touch each other. Oh the horrors! This little guy has an almost obsessive thing for running. He runs 5 miles a day , and recently won a first place in his cross country race. Umm did I mention he is only in second grade. A, you rock! Keep running you will go far…literally ;p

I heart faces~Photo Challenge | Sun Flare

Here is one of my favorites of Miss Megan. We caught the light just as the sun was dropping behind the mountain. Since we haven’t had much (or any) sun around these parts lately I had to go into the archives for these photos. Still some of my very favorite. Thanks for visiting!

Ro~Susanville Family Portrait Photographer

I have known this little girl since she was a baby. She has grown into such a spunky young thing. I had the pleasure of taking her out on our own for her birthday session, while mom worked. I was completely shocked, and dismayed to learn that she had never heard a Michael Jackson song. Say huh? Especially since her mom had decided to do an 80′s theme for her clothing. I quickly turned on my iPod and brought her into the light! She thought the music was extremely funny. Which of course set us on a great path for a portrait session. Welcome to your 6th year Ro, it is such a pleasure to get to watch you grow, and learn. Stick with me kid, I’ll teach ya a little something about the 80′s, and 90′s!

Day 9: Passions and Hobbies

Mollie is my idol when it comes to being creative. She makes most of her clothes. Whether it be from scratch, or re-imagining clothing that she already has. She spends countless hours creating with her sewing machine.  They say that to be considered a professional at something, you need to spend 10,000 hours working at it. That is 416 + days . She will be an pro before you can say college graduation. I admire her dedication and passion, and her fearlessness when it comes to her style.

Day 10: Place where they feel comfortable
I am relishing this project. This is the most I have been allowed to take pictures of Mollie in years! Although I will admit that I did sneak this one. When I can’t find Mollie at her sewing machine, she is usually in her room hiding out. I will be the first to admit that our house is often chaotic. Loud, fun, noisy, crazy. I relish the time when the quiet comes. We all do. I will also admit that sometimes the quiet hurts my ears. I will be alone , and I won’t be able to take it, so I will blast my music. I don’t look forward to my empty nest days, and I can only pray that my house will be overfilled with grand-babies. I digress. When my kids hide out , I rarely bother them. I let them have their space, and time. Mollie likes to sneak away and read. We all read in our house, and I think it may very well be one of my favorite escapes as well. Tucked under her heating blanket. Hidden away from her sister by a curtain panel. Behind the closed door, in a land where quiet still exists. Here she is unknowing that I had snuck up on her quiet time. I’m ninja like that!

Day 5: Love to hate. I really only have one thing that I want to strangle my husband for on a daily basis, and that is his driving. I didn’t get a chance to photograph him doing that so I came up with the next best thing. Be scared. I do a ton of work on my desk which is in my living room. The thing that makes me crazy is that everyone puts their garbage on my desk. I have to work super hard to keep it even remotely presentable. Obviously I have been busy lately. This is real life people! Of course I love the little people in the back of this picture, I just HATE the mess that accompanies little people.

Day 6: Who they love
This one was so simple. There is one crazy love affair happening in my house, other than my husband and I. Ben and Milo. They have a strange relationship. Ben tortures Milo. Milo tries to run. Milo lies in wait for Ben to sleep, so he can then cuddle up and give love. Maybe he thinks its the only safe way to love Ben. I am pretty sure Milo is right about that!

Day 7: Generations
We don’t have any family close, so I decided to take a picture of Maggie with a picture of her grandma who passed away unexpectedly a few years ago.

Day 8: A gift from the heart
Oh I love this one. My hubby used to kinda suck at giving me gifts(sorry love). Then one day he just kind of got it. This is one of my all time favorite gifts from him. It wasn’t expensive. It was that he took the time. He knew what my favorite picture of us was. He took the time to get on my computer, find the picture and have it made into an iPhone skin. If you had any idea how not computer savvy he is, you would know that this gift is PRICELESS.

That’s it for tonight. I will post the rest tomorrow. Thank you for visiting, and thank you if you got this far!
